ABSTRACT

Not just students but people in all walks of life and at all ages do certain things less successfully than they might because, for a variety of reasons, they think they can’t do them, or do them very well. This belief has a number of sources and assumes a number of consequent forms. All ten statements that follow I have heard (and occasionally said!) at some time, but they are exemplary rather than exhaustive: you could probably nominate a further ten in very little time.
