ABSTRACT

Today some Americans still believe that our nation was once ethnically and racially homogeneous and that our multicultural society is a recent development. Others see the traditional subjugation of immigrants and people of color as part of our national heritage. Most educated Americans recognize that xenophobic ideas and discrimination are dangerous. As an American teacher you have a responsibility to correctly inform students about the true nature of our heterogeneous society. It is up to you to provide them with a true image of our society and the multicultural history which created it.
