ABSTRACT

In this chapter we shall describe what children do during the day and how the socioeconomic conditions they live in affect their options and choices. Children by and large operate in four different spaces: the home compound, the school compound, the school access route, and the roaming area. The last in that list is somewhat limited for the children living in cities, as their habitat has mostly grown into urban jungle. Urban people witness the mushrooming of new hotels, roadside shops and houses, but unfortunately not the development of many schools or cultural and sport clubs for children. A potential fi fth space to add to the list above, one which would be greatly benefi cial to children, is regrettably unavailable to most: playgrounds or cultural and sport centres. Playgrounds for children in most areas are a luxury.
