ABSTRACT

Stock indices are measures of the price performance of stock portfolios, which may be seen as representative of a stock market as a whole or of a segment of the market. The better known indices include the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Standard & Poor’s 500, and the NASDAQ in the United States; the FTSE 100 in the United Kingdom; the Nikkei 225 in Japan; the DAX in Germany; the CAC 40 in France; and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong. All countries with stock markets have at least one index, and some countries (in particular the United States) have numerous indices.
