ABSTRACT

I often wonder what my life would have been had I stayed in Cuba. I wonder about my mirror images, my schoolmates that might still be in Cuba. What has their life been like?

I remember that my father started taking Russian lessons in 1960. I would look over his shoulder and be fascinated with the Cyrillic alphabet. I too wanted to learn Russian. I am convinced that had I stayed in Cuba, subjected to constant indoctrination, I would have been a good little communist, at least for awhile. I would have been instructed, but not educated. Education implies a wide range of knowledge and being able to satisfy all intellectual curiosity. Cubans are limited by the state as to what they can read and even what careers they can study (whatever is needed by the government at the moment).
