ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to look at the nature of ethical problems and to determine how to structure decisions that are ethical and will provide outcomes that are acceptable on a personal and organisational level. In some approaches it is the presence of an ethical decision-making process rather than the outcome which is dominant. This Kantian approach cannot completely ignore the outcomes and an unfettered utilitarian approach might rationalise itself too narrowly and justify unacceptable behaviour. A decision-making model is a blended approach to combine different ethical approaches which successively resolve dilemmas. The objectives are:

• awareness of the ethical state of health; • to explore the process of moral development; • to understand the nature of an ethical dilemma and provide some context,

categorisation and general case studies; • to make applications to topical issues in the management of the built

environment; • guidance for the different decision-making models and the inputs required

for success.
