ABSTRACT
The project is a £300m private finance initiative (PFI) project for a new hospital, designed and built for the City Health Care Trust on the site of the old, early twentieth-century hospital. Derby City General is a working hospital delivered in two phases in several blocks. The first phase consisted of temporary accommodation, demolition of old buildings, a new treatment centre and a new acute hospital of five storeys built on the site of part of the existing buildings. Phase two consists of a further five storey acute block, built on the site of the remainder of the demolished buildings. There is a complete refurbishment of the five storey gynaecological and obstetrics block. This block is joined to the new phase two acute block across the whole of one elevation. New access roads and traffic system are incorporated together with an extension of the energy centre. The hospital incorporates the facilities of the other city hospital.
