ABSTRACT

Grieving children and adolescents may be angry and confused, like the grieving children in The Secret Garden. The two main child characters in the book, Mary Lennoy and Colin Craven have both had a parent die. It is often helpful for people who are experiencing depression from grief to participate in an activity that they enjoy. Grieving children and adolescents may feel that no one understands them. This could make them feel that they must handle their grief alone and missing the person who died may make them feel especially lonely. Sometimes grieving children may behave rudely or aggressively, and this may push people away from them at a time when they need the help and support of others. Children and adolescents are still “egocentric” in many ways. They may not have developed the ability to take another perspective yet or to sympathize with the feelings of others.
