ABSTRACT

Companies evolve over a period of time; expanding, diversifying and contracting, depending on circumstances. There is a need to periodically re-evaluate the business, not just because there is a problem, but because the business world is always changing and the company needs to position itself to take full advantage of opportunities that might arise. Sometimes the changes are small, but in other cases the changes are dramatic moving the business in a different direction with major implications to the employees and their future with the company. Examples of this are when in the 1990s Wimpey and Tarmac decided to exchange parts of their business, Wimpey giving its contracting arm to Tarmac and in return received Tarmac’s house building. In 2001 Alfred McAlpine sold its house building and used the proceeds to build up facilities management and utility services.
