ABSTRACT

To help the family discover new information, the therapist is simply asking questions at this point in the therapeutic process. The questions she asks are about how individuals think, feel and behave and how groups of individuals interact. The therapist therefore asks questions of the system so that the information produced will reveal the way the family is interconnected and how it operates as a system. As this information is generated, the family should begin to become aware of their way of interacting. The therapist's practical aim is to question in a way that releases new information for the family to consider. This awareness should help family members reach a new understanding, which can then lead to change.
