ABSTRACT

We heartily agree with one survey respondent who noted that “there can be enormous professional satisfaction in this field.” Many even find great satisfaction in administrative responsibilities, although that work presents additional challenges and demands. Yet, unfortunately, that sense of satisfaction can be tempered by the need to negotiate political quagmires and pits of despair dug by difficult (often very difficult) people with whom you must work-and with whom you must remain collegial. This is not to say that all of your colleagues will be difficult. Indeed, you will find, as have we, that your colleagues may become research collaborators and dear friends. However, there will be moments when people, politics, and administrative demands challenge your quest for success. “Making it” often means succeeding despite it all.
