IN C H A P T E R 3 , W E traced the history of women’s magazinesthrough the second half of the twentieth century, from the traditional publications – with their emphasis on the home, beauty, finding a husband and keeping him – through to the success of the ‘independent and sexy’ Cosmopolitan in the 1980s and 1990s. But what messages do today’s magazines convey? And what do readers make of them?
