ABSTRACT

Here I offer a detailed analysis of long-distance object agreement in Hindi. After reviewing the basic facts, and establishing similarities between the Hindi facts and facts that motivated an Agree-analysis in existential constructions of the English-type, I show that an Agree-based account of Hindi long-distance object agreement is superior to various alternatives: SpecHead agreement, feature movement, etc. I also suggest that the phenomenon of long-distance agreement in Hindi is related to restructuring, a specic analysis of which enables me to treat case and agreement licensing as working in tandem.
