ABSTRACT

It is now time to turn to a positive account of the virtues of inquiry. The virtues in question will be character traits that are internally related to the particular good of the practice of inquiry. This does not necessarily mean that the relevant virtues will have different names from the more generally familiar virtues, such as the cardinal virtues. Rather, what will often be the case is that virtues that are typically important in a wide variety of domains will become specifi ed in particular ways in accordance with the nature of the practice. An obvious case of this is the virtue of intellectual courage. So I will, in many cases, articulate a particularly inquiry-based account of virtues such as moderation or justice, known initially from other contexts.
