ABSTRACT

After having taught only the year 1965–1966 and having seen Lucullus performed there, Sessions left Juilliard, then still at the 122nd Street and Claremont Avenue building, for the 1966–1967 year. He had been invited to give the prestigious Ernest Bloch Lectures at Berkeley. (Bloch had died in 1959.) The 1964 lecturer had been Ralph Kirkpatrick; the previous lecturer was Winton Dean. Joseph Kerman, along with others, had written an enthusiastic recommendation letter for Sessions to become the third lecturer in this newly created position. The University paid Sessions considerably more than he received at Juilliard for a year’s teaching: $20,000.
