ABSTRACT

For me, and no doubt for many teachers, this is where social inclusion starts to bite. We have worked hard to overcome the barriers that prevent some children and young people from attending school as they should. If necessary we have used our legal powers to force their parents into accepting responsibility for the fact that they’re not there. We are constantly vigilant about those who disappear after registration. We send text messages to their parents, carry out checks every lesson and even retrieve the pupils from the streets and the local shopping precinct. We have rewarded those whose attendance is highest and those who have improved. We have arranged special alternative programmes and are confident that what we have to offer in this school meets every individual’s needs. The children on the fringes are here like never before. And their behaviour is a nightmare. It was so much easier without them!
