      ABSTRACT

The role of the teaching assistant in supporting practical work is simple: help them; do not do it for them (unless there is a safety issue). This is true whether the practical work is pouring liquid into a container, using a computer, measuring height or making an electric circuit. Practical activity is designed to help children develop scientific understanding, a range of skills and an ability to work with others and to share ideas. The two words that teachers and teaching assistants need to keep in mind are ‘hands off’ (unless the child really cannot manage without assistance).
