ABSTRACT

We’ve already said that as a new head, you’re on a different planet. And if you visit a different planet, then you need to dress and behave appropriately. Lose your protective clothing and you’re in trouble. In this case, the clothing is mainly, though not entirely, metaphorical. What we’re actually discussing is the importance of assuming the role of leader – acting as if you’re in charge, believing it and relishing it. The soccer manager Lawrie McMenemy who (many of you will be pleased to know) led Southampton to victory over Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup Final, once said in an interview on leadership,

The first thing you must do when you walk through the door is take charge. Then, every morning after that, look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Do I want to be in charge?” If the answer is not an immediate yes, then get out.
