In a modern house the upstairs partitions are usually what is known as stud partitions (a timber frame with plasterboard both sides). However, as ground floor partitions often provide support for the floors

above, some of the ground floor partitions are normally made from blockwork. It was common practice in the not too distant past to build loadbearing internal blockwork partitions off the floor slab and, other than a slight thickening in the slab, not to bother with a proper foundation.
