ABSTRACT
Where a new second-storey extension is being built over an older extension, always assuming that the old wall construction is proved to be adequate (e.g. a suitable cavity wall), the Building Control Department will wish to ensure that the existing structure can take the new loads. With this in mind, they will often insist on a note on the plans requiring parts of the old footings to be exposed to prove adequacy.
