ABSTRACT

Since a lot of teacher effort can go into trips, staff should consider in advance how they might monitor the way such outings contribute to enriching pupils’ learning and understanding. A report on the effectiveness of the introduction of the Gifted and Talented strand within Excellence in Cities during 1999-2000 made the points that, although target setting

is a valuable tool in raising standards and the quality of provision . . . more thought needs to be given to the range of targets and to the success criteria; the number of out of school visits completed by a school is not a valuable criterion of success; the ultimate success criteria should focus on producing creative thinkers rather than training pupils to pass exams.
