ABSTRACT

The notion that social class position is secured through housing consumption practices has been captured in the literature on gentrification of inner-urban areas of cities as varied as Manchester, New York and Toronto. Chapter 2 discussed how this literature has provided insights into processes of middleclass formation and fragmentation within urban housing markets. Although insightful, this literature nevertheless provides a partial and limited analysis of processes of social class formation within the context of the housing market. A number of lacunas are pertinent.
