ABSTRACT
It’s hard to imagine a subject more likely than definitions to bring yawns tothe reader. Yet, it’s a topic packed full of interesting and important issues,many of them central to how we understand mathematics. The nature of definition is not much discussed today for the simple reason that there is an official view which is completely dominant and apparently unproblematic.
