ABSTRACT

This chapter will look at the relevant areas of the early years curriculum and link the theory into the practical activities. It will show how the outdoor activity programme can be an inclusive practice for all children. Information will be included about ways to handle difficult situations outdoors through the use of problem-solving skills. The use of the welcome and complementary circle will be discussed to show how to make the most of any new learning that has occurred during the session, including the use of songs to accompany outdoor activities. This chapter will also include case studies to demonstrate the use of positive reinforcement. It will discuss the importance of non-verbal behaviour and role modelling, showing respect and using clear communication to encourage children to do well. In addition there is information about the importance of setting time aside at the end of the programme for reflection.
