ABSTRACT

An interest in research on teaching in the field of communication traces back to the earliest beginnings of the field. When the first professional association in the field (what is now known as the Eastern Communication Association) was founded in 1909 it was founded by college teachers of speech. When the first journal (Quarterly Journal of Speech) in the field was published by our first national association (now known as the National Communication Association) shortly after its founding in 1914, the primary focus of the journal was teaching. The founding fathers of the field held teaching as a high priority and devoted considerable scholarly attention to it.
