ABSTRACT
If radically different political cultures exist, a logical question arises. Where do these differences come from? Why exactly are people alienated from politics and cynical in southern Italy, Colombia, and south central Los Angeles, while they are imbued with a reasonable degree of trust in governmental processes and a participatory spirit in Sweden, Switzerland, and Minnesota?
