ABSTRACT

Before studying the concept of organisational culture in any particular sector of industry, the reader needs to acquire a thorough knowledge of the nature and development of organisational study and research, and in particular to examine the interest in and development of the study of organisational culture in a range of organisations. It is important to be able to answer questions such as ‘How did such an interest develop?’, ‘Who were the main contributors in the field?’ and ‘What impact did this field of study have on modern organisations?’ Chapter 2 reviews and analyses the relevant literature that has appeared on this issue over the years and sets the scene for subsequent chapters that examine closely the literature on the relationship between ‘organisational culture’ and ‘effectiveness’.
