ABSTRACT

The following provides an introduction to the work of Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno, and Herbert Marcuse. In each case I highlight aspects of their work that are thematic for my thesis as a whole: fantasy and imagination, ideology and ideology critique, nature and culture, reconciliation and utopian longing, and subject and object. These points are summarized here for the purpose of providing an introduction to critical theory as well as providing an abbreviated intellectual context for the later work of Jürgen Habermas.
