In Civilization and Its Discontents (1930), Freud reminded his readers once again of the claims he had made in Totem and Taboo. In that earlier work, he wrote, he had ``tried to show how the way led from . . . [the primitive] family to the succeeding stage of communal life in the form of bands of brothers.''
