ABSTRACT

The study of globalization centers on the daily flow of money, goods, services, media messages, knowledge and ideas around the world. This is nothing new. These flows have been part and parcel of the growth and development of human society. What is new, however, is the level, intensity and rapidity of these flows in recent decades. What is also new is the number of people involved in these flows. Through their engagement in everyday life, individuals become connected, directly and indirectly, with countless numbers of other individuals around the world, most of whom they have never met. Globalization is about the increase in the interconnectivity and interdependence of more and more people around the world. When I look at my desk, around my study, and at the rest of my house, most of the goods and items by which I am surrounded were designed, made and transported by people around the world who never met me or each other.
