ABSTRACT

The interest of archaeologists and anthropologists in technological evolution was, obviously, turned towards artefacts of the past, and to artefacts presently in use in various cultures. The parallel interest of designers and architects was, equally clearly, directed rather towards the future, to the production of new designs. For designers, the study of the history of the development of tools or of building types was valuable in so far as it could reveal principles or methods which might then be consciously applied in contemporary practice.
