ABSTRACT

Hayley is a young and enthusiastic modern foreign languages (MFL) teacher who has been working in the same secondary school for the past six years. She is a cheerful, outgoing and popular member of staff, always willing to volunteer although she frequently forgets to carry out the things she has promised! Hayley is an effective communicator and she has excellent rapport with her students. She is a gifted linguist and has strong subject knowledge but she has always

experienced some difficulties in relation to student behaviour, owing to her lack of organisational skills. Read the description of a typical French lesson outlined below:

Hayley’s class of Year 9 students (aged 13-14) have arrived for their French lesson and are making a lot of noise as they gather outside the classroom waiting for Hayley to arrive. She is frequently late for the beginning of lessons. The Spanish teacher (disturbed by all the noise) comes out of the room next door and tells the students to go into their classroom quietly and get themselves ready for the start of the lesson.
