ABSTRACT

In a more pragmatic vein, what we are suggesting is that you become familiar with the concept of mirror gazing or honest self-reflection. The story in the box on the opposite page illustrates what this means. This was a powerful lesson and one that the player never forgot. While we all assess our performances from time to

time, it is rare that this evaluation will be thorough and systematic. Instead, quite naturally, we will be inclined to be selective, choosing only particular aspects of play that we consider most important or that we believe others will focus on. In this way we may lose a rounded or balanced picture of performance and come to highlight a small fraction of the total scene. This bias will then influence how we prepare, and so the cycle of delusion continues.
