ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will consider how to build upon children’s positive home experiences of language and literacy. We will look at how to use the existing frameworks for language and literacy teaching as outlined in the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage (DfEE 2000) and the National Literacy Strategy Framework for Teaching guidance for YR (DfEE 1998) in a creative and innovative manner in order to maintain and extend young children’s love of story. The emphasis in this chapter is on telling and responding to stories as it is through the development of planning and telling stories, of structuring and attuning to the language and impact of stories, that children will begin to gain an understanding of how to read, write and make stories for themselves.
