Long, hard work is needed to educate an actor in the ethos and advanced technique of the Moscow Art Theatre. While he is learn-

ing, the actor also needs to be protected from harmful extraneous influences, and that is why so few 'outsiders' were ever invited in. Actors, as Stanislavski put it, must be 'nurtured' inside the theatre. The invitation I received to join the Moscow Art Theatre was one of those rare exceptions which the theatre's managers, for various reasons, sometimes made.
