ABSTRACT

Many history resources and source materials are highly visual in nature, requiring pupils to sort through information presented in a variety of formats, e.g. photographs, textbooks, artefacts, maps and diagrams, etc. History teaches pupils important skills such as interpreting, evaluating and communicating information. The whole class can benefit from using other senses in the exploration of history topics. The most appropriate solution can become apparent by asking the question ‘What information is the pupil required to obtain from this source?’ Given advance warning, many museums, etc. will arrange access for pupils with visual impairment to touch items that would otherwise be kept out of reach. The history curriculum relies on many graphical sources; charts, tables, maps, photographs and cartoons. Some are included purely to provide information; others demand a degree of critical observation to draw conclusions.
