ABSTRACT

Science equipment can either be modified for use by pupils with visual impairment or specialist equipment can be purchased. Data-logging is an area of current expansion. The software supplied with datalogging equipment often has the facility to provide an enlarged meter on the screen. It is worth investigating whether speech software can access these numbers to provide a range of talking devices such as voltmeters, ammeters and oxygen meters. A microscope adapted for use with a video camera and monitor can enable pupils with visual impairment to take part in and benefit from microscope activities. Sighted pupils can also benefit from this method. Drawing on the monitor screen with a black water-soluble pen can help pupils locate the important features. One advantage of using a video camera system is that the images can be recorded for future use. Most sound experiments can be easily adapted for pupils with visual impairment.
