ABSTRACT

In the UK, local authorities have sensory support services, which include qualified specialist teachers for visual impairment, also known as qualified teachers for the visually impaired. Specialist teachers often complete an assessment of functional vision and provide the school with a report outlining the challenges to be faced and strategies for dealing with them. Specialist teachers usually offer training to staff at the school, on a whole-school basis, to a small group or even to individuals. The frequency of visits is determined by pupils’ needs, and each service has its own criteria for making these decisions. During a visit the specialist teacher may observe the pupil in class to assess accessibility to the curriculum and how the pupil is coping. Strategies may be suggested to assist teachers, support staff and pupils. The Special Educational Needs Coordinator is the ‘hub’ of all things relating to special educational needs within the school.
