ABSTRACT

Assessment is an integral part of the whole-school curriculum, which contributes to the learning and achievements of all pupils. In some instances, formal assessment methods may not be appropriate for pupils with visual impairment. Modification of assessments for pupils with visual impairment should follow the same principles as modification of classroom materials. Pupils with visual impairment may require adult support for activities they are unable to take part in independently. It is important to distinguish between learning achievements and the ability to record results. For most external assessments, modified versions of tests and examination materials are available, in addition to a range of access arrangements. Informal assessment allows pupils to demonstrate their knowledge in situations that are more familiar and comfortable to them. The assessment is formative; its aim is to aid the learning process. All pupils with visual impairment require a functional vision assessment.
