ABSTRACT
Spoken language involves the development of complex skills. A competent conversationalist will be able automatically to adjust their use of language to suit the context and the people they are with, altering their conversational style to take account of differing communication demands. For example, answering questions in a formal situation (e.g. in the classroom) will be handled in a very different way from responding to friends in the school playground.
