ABSTRACT

The received wisdom is that a child that is very able in RE is highly motivated. The widespread assumption is that very able children are naturally inquisitive, have retentive minds and enjoy learning. The truth is that some very able pupils can have an extraordinary flair for RE but can also have very real learning difficulties. Being gifted in RE but also having to struggle with learning difficulties is not a contradiction. Teachers of RE need to be sensitive to the needs of individual pupils who have particular learning difficulties which may require quite specific tailored support.
