ABSTRACT
Comparative government would benefit from looking at institutions within a principal-agent framework. Thus seen, political institutions would be erected and supported for their contribution in structuring the interaction between politicians and the population. Those institutions that promote the rule of law would be especially interesting to the principal, as they would allow him/her to restrain the agents, while at the same time sending clear signals about what they would want the agent to accomplish.
