ABSTRACT

In political evolution it is the regime which changes, or evolves, from one type to another. Thus, political evolution is about polity change and development. The main forms of polity that mankind has employed since the dawn of civilisation may be identified through an inspection of the history of polities. Thus, I will look for the mechanisms that account for polity evolution, from the Greek city-state to the modern nation-state. In order to gain an impression of the meanings of the word “polity”, one may consult a few definitions from the literature. Wikipedia lists the following meanings for “polity”:
