Proceeding forward and backward at the same time, lurching between eclectic borrowing from the menacing Western powers and celebration of ancient domestic traditions, Japan successfully embraced industrialization and emerged as a power to be reckoned with in the Eurocentric nation-state system between the Meiji Restoration and the onset of World War I.
