Chapter 9 examined two forms of influence that operate in addition to the impact of specific environmental stimuli. First were social processes, through which happiness can be in part determined by opinions and pressures from other people. Second, 10 kinds of judgment were shown to be important, when an input from the environment is appraised against reference standards. As well as their involvement in specific episodes, judgment processes were seen also to be repeated consistently within persons between situations, such that people who are in general happy or in general unhappy tend to construe their world regularly through repeated application of thought processes that support a continuing level.
