ABSTRACT

This chapter examines teachers’ perspectives on their pupils’ learning outcomes. Their views of the extent to which their pupils will have attained each of the five Generic Learning Outcomes are explored in turn. The quantitative data in the last chapter showed that pupils value the enjoyment, inspiration and creativity that they find in museums and that teachers consider this to be the most important learning outcome of the visit. But at one level this seems very superficial; is it just for fun that teachers bring their pupils to museums? Given the effort that teachers have to make to take a class out of school, especially at secondary level, this seems improbable.1 What else do teachers think their pupils will have gained from their museum visit? And why is enjoyment so significant?
