ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a set of small islands off the north-west coast of the European continent: but it retains, as a result of its history, an importance far beyond its size. For the past few years the UK economy has been comparatively successful with low levels of unemployment and steady growth. It is a comparatively open economy, with a strong international bias.
