ABSTRACT
On first consideration from sports experience, the viewpoint that sports actions and sports outcomes might be thought of, and even explained, with reference to chance might seem questionable and, for some perhaps, objectionable. Nonetheless, in the following sections we demonstrate that considerations of sports contests from the perspective of chance, using probability analysis, is a useful way of analysing and informing on sports behaviours and to do this, we first consider some definitions.
