ABSTRACT

This chapter examines implications for research and evaluation. In respect to research, suggestions for further research to test the validity of the model are provided. We shall consider the possibility of using four different types of studies to test the validity of the model: (1) longitudinal studies on effectiveness, (2) quantitative syntheses of effectiveness studies, (3) international studies on effectiveness, and (4) experimental studies. Specifically, we shall present suggestions for the design of longitudinal studies which emerge from the findings of the study presented in Chapter 8 concerned with the validity of the model at the classroom level. Moreover, the extent to which quantitative syntheses of national studies can generate empirical support for the model will be investigated. Thus, we shall provide suggestions for conducting meta-analyses which arise from our attempt to conduct a quantitative synthesis of school effectiveness studies in order to test the validity of the model at the school level (see Chapter 9). Finally, we shall raise the possibility of using experimental and international studies that can help us create enough variation in the functioning of each effectiveness factor and thereby to search for non-linear relations between effectiveness factors and outcomes. A programme for international studies will be outlined and is expected to help us identify the generic character of the dynamic model.
