ABSTRACT

The communication process in technical design has been built and

developed into a fairly efficient process but is based on a mutual under-

standing and acceptance of underlying rules. A fresh approach starts

from first principles asking basic questions such as:

Who needs to know? Why do they need to know? What do they need to know? Traditional methods approach this process by providing accurate draw-

ings, specification notes and/or specification systems such as the NBS.

These are particularly suitable in most circumstances and have the

added advantage of being understood by most commercial organisa-

tions. An alternative approach that is perhaps appropriate to the devel-

opment of new concepts is to question the fundamental culture of the

entire traditional process.
